Event Description

The Foreign Policy Association was pleased to offer a talk on The Power of Money: How Governments and Banks Create Money and Help Us All Prosper. We were delighted to be joined by Paul Sheard, FPA Director and author of the aforementioned book, and Douglas L. Peterson, President, and CEO of S&P Global. 

This event ran from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and was followed by a reception.

    • Dr. Paul Sheard - Speaker
      Author of The Power of Money

      Paul Sheard is a noted Australian American economist. He was Research Fellow and Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School. Previously, he was Vice Chairman of S&P Global, after serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Economist. Earlier, he held chief economist positions at Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services, Nomura Securities and Lehman Brothers, and was Head of Japan Equity Investments at Baring Asset Management. Sheard was on the faculty of the Australian National University (ANU) and of Osaka University, and was a visiting assistant professor at Stanford University and foreign visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan.

      Sheard is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the New Agenda for Fiscal and Monetary Policy and was a member of the WEF’s Global Future Council on the New Economic Agenda (2018-2020) and its Global Agenda Council on the International Monetary System (2010-2012). He was appointed twice, by Prime Minister Hashimoto and by Prime Minister Obuchi, to serve on committees of the Japanese Government’s Economic Deliberation Council. He is on the board of the Foreign Policy Association and is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Economic Club of New York. Sheard served as a non-executive director of ORIX Corporation (2003-2010). He speaks regularly at conferences around the world, and his views on the global economy and policy are frequently cited in the international press.

      Author or editor of several books and numerous academic articles, Sheard’s book in Japanese, Mein Banku Shihon Shugi no Kiki (The Crisis of Main Bank Capitalism), won the Suntory-Gakugei Prize in the Economics–Politics Division. Sheard has a BA (Hons) from Monash University and a Master of Economics and Ph.D. from the ANU. and received a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from Monash University.

       

    • Douglas Peterson - Moderator/Host
      President & CEO, S&P Global

      Doug Peterson has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of S&P Global since 2013. He joined the company in 2011 as President of its credit ratings business.

      Mr. Peterson has repositioned S&P Global to power the financial markets of the future with data, analytics and benchmarks. Under his leadership, the company has steadily made investments in people, international expansion, cutting-edge technology, innovation and environmental, social and governance, or ESG, solutions. In early 2022, S&P Global completed a transformative merger with IHS Markit to create powerful new insights for customers.

      Mr. Peterson is a leading voice on ESG issues. He chairs the Bipartisan Policy Center’s ESG Taskforce, and in 2021 he led a workstream of the G7’s Impact Taskforce focused on mobilizing private capital for public good by advocating for globally consistent standards to measure, value and account for sustainability. At S&P Global, Mr. Peterson created a new organization within the company, Sustainable1, to be a single source of intelligence for customers navigating the transition to a low carbon, sustainable and equitable future.

      Before joining S&P Global, Mr. Peterson was the Chief Operating Officer of Citibank, N.A., Citigroup’s principal banking entity. Over his 26 years at Citigroup, he served as Chief Auditor, CEO of Citigroup Japan and in leadership roles in Latin America.

      Mr. Peterson chairs the U.S.-Japan Business Council and is a member of the Boards of Directors of the Japan Society and the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the New York Stock Exchange Board Advisory Council. In addition, he serves on the Advisory Board of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Systemic Resolution Advisory Committee and as a Trustee of Claremont McKenna College and the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

      Born and raised in New Mexico, Mr. Peterson received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an undergraduate degree from Claremont McKenna College.
