Great Discussions Myerstown began in May, 2022 and meets on the second Thursday of each month in the conference room at the Myerstown Community Library. In 2024, with the advent of our third year, we decided to meet year round. New members are welcome to join in on our great discussions. As of this writing, our members are a good mix of men and woman ranging in age from 23 -91. I

Program Schedule

The eight topics presented in the Great Decisions Journal are discussed at our May through December meetings. If you don't have a book, or if weren't able to read the article, come anyway and participate. At each meeting we can photocopy the next month's journal article for anyone who needs a copy.

At our January through April meetings, we present Abstracts: Great Discussions in the Humanities where we focus on broad topics in the humanities and the arts and sciences. As examples of actual programs:

  • We addressed what the experience was for those living in the margins of our society. We hosted the vice president of the NAACP and leaders from the Hispanic community along with all of us to discuss this important topic. It was illuminating for all of us.
  • In another Abstracts program, we listened to and discussed The Music and Literature of Bob Dylan: A Brief Tour. We played selected songs and discussed them.
  • For our first road trip, we visited the Lebanon Valley Mosque where we were guests of the Imam Sheikh Muhammad. He was a gracious host, and he welcomed every question we had and answered them with great grace. This was one of our best attended programs ever.
  • For another of our best attended programs, we featured Vincent van Gogh: His Life through his Work. We viewed 191 of van Gogh's selected paintings in high def and in chronological order and discussed them openly. What great fun that was!
