Event Description
Please join the Foreign Policy Association for a panel discussion on the future of U.S.-ROK relations with Dr. David P. Fields, Professor of History at the Center for East Asian Studies at University of Wisconsin–Madison and author of Foreign Friends: Syngman Rhee, American Exceptionalism, and the Division of Korea. Dr. Fields will be speaking with Ambassador Euy Whan Kim, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in New York City.
This lecture will take place at the SUNY Global Center at 116 East 55th Street, between Park and Lexington Avneue. The lecture will begin at 6:00pm and will be followed by a reception.

David P. Fields - Speaker
Professor of HIstory, University of Wisconsin–Madison Center for East Asian StudiesDavid earned his PhD in history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, specializing in US-Korean relations. He is the author of Foreign Friends: Syngman Rhee, American Exceptionalism, and the Division of Korea (University Press of Kentucky, 2019), the editor of The Diary of Syngman Rhee, (published by the Museum of Contemporary Korean History, 2015,) and Divided America, Divided Korea: The US and Korea During and After the Trump Years (Cambridge University Press, 2024). He has been published in the Washington Post, The National Interest, North Korea Review, Journal of American-East Asian Relations, SinoNK.com, NKnews.org, Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society-Korea Branch and in the Working Papers Series of the Cold War International History Project. His commentary and analysis has appeared on National Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio, C-SPAN, and CNN in addition to local radio and television.

Amb. Euy Whan Kim - Speaker
Consul General of the Republic of Korea in New YorkMr. Euy Whan Kim began his duties as the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in New York on December 23, 2022. As a prolific author of six books and an international expert on public affairs and policy, he brings over thirty years of diverse experience in public service to his current position. Prior to this role, Mr. Kim held various positions within the Korean government, including as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) from July 2019 to December 2020. During his secondment to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from October 2017, he served as a Senior Anti-Corruption Advisor. Before that, from March 2011, he took on multiple Director-General roles within ACRC. Earlier, Mr. Kim worked as Deputy Secretary to the President for SMEs in Economic Affairs and Public Relations Planning, starting in 2008. He also held positions at the Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption (KICAC) as Chief Director of the Bureau of Inspection (2006-2008), Director of the Inspection Planning Division (2005-2006), and Director of the International and NGO Cooperation Division (2002-2005). Mr. Kim passed the 34th High Civil Service Examination in 1990 and earned his B.A. from Korea University and his M.A. in Public Policy and Management from the Ohio State University.
