Please join the Foreign Policy Association in welcoming Professor Charles Edel of the U.S. Naval War College. Professor Edel will be discussing his recent book, Nation Builder: John Quincy Adams and the Grand Strategy of the Republic, which focuses on the career of John Quincy Adams, including his time as a diplomat, Secretary of State, President, and Congressman.

    • Professor Charles N. Edel
      Professor of Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College

      Professor Charles N. Edel holds a Ph.D. in history from Yale University. Awarded a Henry A. Luce Scholarship, he worked at Peking University’s Center for International and Strategic Studies, where he taught courses on American politics and foreign policy. 

      Previously, he served as a political and counterterrorism analyst for the U.S. government, and worked as a research associate for U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he researched and wrote about key global issues for the 21st century, including U.S. strategic relationships in Asia, domestic drivers of foreign policy, and the role of religion and ideology in foreign policy. Prior to that, he spent several years teaching history and law at Middle College High School in New York. Currently, he is working on a manuscript about the role of grand strategy in early American history.
