Event Transcripts and Video

President Tsakhia Elbegdorj of Mongolia was honored at this year’s New York Democracy Forum, co-hosted by the Foreign Policy Association and the National Endowment for Democracy. Special guest President Rosa Otunbayeva of Kyrgyzstan delivered opening remarks, followed by introductions by Carl Gershman, President of the NED. In his keynote address, President Elbegdorj emphasized the struggle of democratic transitions, drawing on his own experiences in Mongolia’s transformation from 70 years of communism to Chairman of the Community of Democracies.

“One thing which we all have to be mindful [of]; it is easy to conquer the world on horseback, what’s challenging is to dismount and try to govern.”

President Elbegdorj shared passages of his speech to September’s United Nations General Assembly, where he offered support to democratic uprisings of the Arab Spring, and urged the international community to condemn the actions of autocratic leaders suppressing democratic tides. Watch the video to hear President Elbegdorj’s thoughts on democracy, struggles of governance, and the role of the international community in advocating freedom.
