Relations between Taiwan and China remain volatile as Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian continues to press the issue of a national referendum for a Taiwanese declaration of independence from China. While theoretically, Chen can only call a direct vote if China attacks Taiwan, China, which has laid claim to economically prosperous island for year, has stated that any such declaration would result in military force. According to a report from the International Crisis Group, the so-called “one China” policy that has limited hostilities to fiery rhetoric over the past 30 years could no longer be a viable means of keeping the peace.
