WorldQuest New York

The Foreign Policy Association hosted its seventh WorldQuest New York competition on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, for New York City area high schools. 

 

The results were as follows:

First Place: Garden City High School, Garden City, New York

Second Place: Millburn High School, Millburn, New Jersey

Third Place: Herricks High School, New Hyde Park, New York

A flagship program of the World Affairs Councils of America, Academic WorldQuest is an intensive high-school-level team competition designed to challenge its players on their knowledge of international affairs, geography, culture and history. The game pits teams of four against one another as they answer multiple-choice questions related to previously selected categories. 

WorldQuest New York serves as a regional qualifier for the national Academic WorldQuest competition.

What is WorldQuest New York?

WorldQuest New York is organized by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA). FPA, based in New York City, is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring learning about the world.

 

How Do You Play?

The game is a contest between four-person teams, each team representing a high school. Each team may also have an alternate member. Teams compete by answering rounds of questions projected by PowerPoint onto a screen. Teams will have 15 seconds to answer questions for each round.

 

Who Can Play WorldQuest?

Up to 20 teams from New York City and the surrounding area will be eligible to play WorldQuest New York. Teams can be composed of students from grades 9–12.

 

How Can Teams Prepare?

FPA will provide a comprehensive list of sources that students can use to prepare for the competition. Teams can prepare on their own by studying key resources and websites, as well as by using their knowledge of these topics.

 

What is the role of the Adviser?

Teams will be organized by an adviser, who will register the team, assist with their preparation and travel with them to the competition. The adviser may be a member of the school’s faculty or administration.

 

What are the Prizes?

There will be prizes for the top three teams. The team that wins the New York competition will be sent by FPA to Washington, DC, to play in the Academic WorldQuest national competition in April 2013. Additionally, each team member will be awarded $100. Each member of the second place team will receive $50. Each member of the third place team receives $25. All WorldQuest New York players will receive a certificate of participation. Additional prizes will be announced closer to the competition date.
