The United States Institute of Peace is an independent non-partisan institution established by Congress to increase the nation’s peacebuilding capacity. We do this by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as by directly engaging in peacebuilding efforts around the globe. Specifically, we work to: prevent violent conflicts before they occur, mediate & resolve them when they occur, promote post-conflict stability after the fighting ends, and increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide.

 

The Grants Program seeks an individual to serve as a Program Officer in the Institute’s Grant Program. The Grant Program increases the breadth and depth of USIP’s work by supporting peace building projects managed by nonprofit organizations around the world, including educational institutions, research institutions, civil society organizations, and NGOs. The Program Officer plays a key role in the administration of the Grant Program. 

  • Managing a diverse portfolio of grants; 
  • Providing guidance to applicants in the preparation of grant proposals, including active assistance in the development of grant applications from organizations in priority countries identified by USIP; 
  • Reviewing and evaluating new proposals; 
  • Managing the process of proposal evaluation, including internal and external peer review; 
  • Monitoring the implementation and evaluation of grant projects and contracts; 
  • Assisting in the Grant Program’s strategic planning;
  • Serve as one of USIP's resource persons in the individual’s area(s) of expertise.

Qualification:
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or be nationals of countries currently allied with the United States in a defense effort, (as determined by the Office of the Assistant Legal Adviser for Treaty Affairs, Department of State).
  • The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in a relevant social science discipline, security studies or international relations; demonstrated skills in grant making, evaluation and administration,
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and editorial skills.
  • Experience with preparation of publications accessible to a broad public audience.
  • Significant international or other experience in working cross-culturally; and strong interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • In addition to these qualifications, the Institute welcomes applications from individuals who also possess expertise in the comparative politics of Africa, Latin America, the post-Soviet republics, or Asia.
