Doctors of the World is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial fundraiser who has the passion and leadership skills to develop its new branch in the United States.
Doctors of the World, also known internationally as Médecins du Monde or MdM, is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to vulnerable populations both at home and abroad, helping those affected by conflict, natural disasters, disease, poverty or exclusion. Branching off from Médecins sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders in 1980, MdM has grown into an international network with branches in 14 countries, projects in 70 countries, and an annual budget of $160 million. Although MdM’s primary aim is to provide medical care, our work goes further to ensure long-lasting effectiveness. We draw on our experiences on the ground to bear witness to obstacles to healthcare and to advocate for change.
Reporting & Responsibilities As a member of the MdM International Network, MdM-USA aligns with the MdM Network’s strategies, policies and practices. Accordingly, the MdM-USA Development Director has a strong working relationship and frequent contact with the MdM International Network Head Office. Reporting to the MdM-USA Executive Director (with responsibility toward the MdM Network as noted), the Development Director provides day-to-day management of Development activities for MdM-USA, including the following key responsibilities:
Develop and oversee a multi-faceted fundraising strategy and program, including direct mail, major gifts, special events, Internet and social media, and corporate sponsorships, to ensure that MdM-USA meets or exceeds its fundraising goals.
Oversee the development of all printed and on-line development material, ensuring content and art are aligned with MdM’s brand identity and communications strategy and guidelines.
Manage relationships with externally contracted services in the areas of fundraising.
With the Executive Director, develop and maintain relationships with strategically important individuals and organizations, especially individual donors, foundations, media, the MdM International Network Head Office and MdM Network members.
With the Executive Director, champion the mission of MdM-USA and the MdM Network, serving as a U.S. spokesperson for the MdM Network, especially to media, major donors, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.
Have a minimum of 8 years experience in supervising multi-faceted fundraising operations (direct mail, major gifts, foundations, Internet, and corporate sponsorship).
Have a proven track record in the development of fundraising strategies appropriate for a small- or medium-sized organization.
Have managed staff and/or external consultants, and are familiar with administrative systems (including donor database) and budget management.
Demonstrate experience in representing an organization at the senior level with partners, private sectors, and donors.
Are gifted oral and written communicators with the ability to digest complex issues and make a compelling case that stirs people into action and generates support.
Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast paced environment.
Have fundraising experience in New York City.
Have experience explaining/marketing international humanitarian or development work to donors.
Written or spoken French is an asset.
Possess a Bachelor’s degree; graduate degree preferred.
