The International Youth Christian Exchange hosts volunteer exchange programs in countries around the world. You can search by country for volunteer opportunities that can also be flexible with attending school.
Jesuit Volunteers Corps (JVC) serve the homeless, the unemployed, refugees, people with AIDS, the elderly, street youth, abused women and children, the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled, in both the United States and the rest of the world. Participants interested in volunteering in the United States are required to volunteer for one year and for international service, participants are required two years. JVC has programs around the world in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Pacific Island, and India. Volunteers are given room and board, travel, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend. International volunteers are encouraged to raise about $2500 to help with expenses. Domestic volunteers do not need to contribute funds. Qualified student loans can be deferred; certain domestic assignments qualify for AmeriCorps educational grant of $4725 to be used for loan payments or future tuition at the completion of service. As a faith-based organization, Catholics are encouraged to apply.

Volunteers for Peace offers over 2000 affordable short-term voluntary service projects in 80 countries, including Armenia, Belgium, China, Ecuador, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, South Africa, South Korea, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Turkey, Uganda, United States, Wales and Zambia. Work project include: construction/renovation of low-income housing or community buildings, historic preservation, archeology; environmental projects such as trail building, environmental education, wildlife surveying, park maintenance, organic farming; social services working with children, the elderly, physically or mentally handicapped, refugees, minority groups, drug/alcohol recovery, AIDS education; arts projects or festivals. Most camps are limited to ages 18 and up, a few for ages 15 and up. Workcamps are scheduled for 2-3 weeks each May-Sept. A $200 registration fee per camp covers the program including room and board.
Africa
The Aang Serian Peace Village (the name means "House of Peace" in the Maasai language) is a registered Tanzanian cultural association set up to promote, preserve and document the indigenous cultures of East Africa, especially that of the Maasai people, and to uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples. This organization offers various volunteer opportunities that range from three weeks to three months.
Cross-Cultural Solutions offers the opportunity to volunteer in Ghana and Tanzania. Ghana is a land steeped in tradition. Modern-day Ghana stands proud as one of the most politically stable and culturally rich nations on the continent. Volunteers in Ghana quickly learn that at the heart of this culture lies a strong sense of family and cultural roots and an appreciation for taking a moment to visit with others.
CCS has two different locations in Tanzania, one in Arusha and another in Kilimanjaro. Volunteers in Tanzania gain access to some of Africa's greatest sights, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the national parks which teem with wildlife, and they have the opportunity to meet people from some of the tribes that inhabit the country, including the Maasai, the Sukuma, the Chagga, and the Meru.
Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) hosts 6 week International Volunteering Excursions in Ghana, West Africa. The organized camps change purpose and location yearly, this year including the following topics: community developments, youth work, HIV/AIDS training and prevention. VOLU offers workshops during summer and winter months and charges between $200- $250 for the workshop, plus airfare. VOLU declares each project is rooted within the community and takes its directives from community members.
The Americas
CARE Corps is an educational travel and international volunteer program for people interested in learning about sustainable solutions to poverty. CARE Corps volunteers work in partnership with local people in a variety of community development projects. This unique program offers exciting hands-on work opportunities, meaningful cultural exchange with a Peruvian community, and enriching educational sessions about global issues and CARE. Volunteers live in a CARE Corps house in the middle of the colonial town of Ayacucho where the indigenous Quechua culture still thrives. Three-week sessions are offered every month. Volunteer projects typically include: health care, nutrition, education, hygiene training, literacy, cultural exchange, non-formal education, health education, conservation, community development, income-generation activities, skill/vocational and computer skills training, sports training, nursery care, child care, and art and crafts.

The International Christian Youth Exchange is a non-profit youth exchange organization that offers opportunities to young people all over the world to spend a semester or a year living abroad with a family or host-project and being involved in voluntary service or attending school Projects in Honduras include working with homeless and street children, disabled, ecological projects, children's rights, women organizations, literacy programs, and with NGOs active in rural development. Attendance of university courses is allowed provided it does not interfere with voluntary service.

Since October 2000, Cross-Cultural Solutions volunteers have had the opportunity to experience the people and rich culture of China. Cross-Cultural Solutions is located in Xi'an, home to the famous Terracotta Army. CCS volunteers in China work at local NGOs alongside Chinese volunteers from the community. The diversity of China's people is represented in Xi'an's Tibetan, Muslim, Han and other Chinese ethnicities. Volunteers will have the opportunity to connect with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, exposing them to the wide scope of Chinese culture.
Click 2 Asia is a club designed to support interests of volunteering in Asia. Here, a wide variety of resources are made available to those seeking volunteer opportunities as well as those who have volunteered in the past.
With Cross Cultural Solutions, volunteers have the opportunity to experience two sides of Indian life: the urban hustle and bustle of New Delhi's shantytowns, or the rural villages of the Indian Himalayan foothills. Throughout the year, volunteers work with over a dozen dynamic grass-roots organizations and have the opportunity to go on cultural excursions. CCS also has a program in Dharamsala, India. Located in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala is rich in culture and welcomes visitors; volunteers in Dharamsala enjoy learning about its customs and history and often visit the area where the Dalai Lama resides.

Cross-Cultural Solutions has two locations in Thailand. Individuals can choose to volunteer in Bangkok or in Trang. They have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a country known for its scenic diversity and ancient traditions. Cross-Cultural Solutions volunteer programs in Russia are based in Yaroslavl, the unofficial capital of Russia's "Golden Ring," a symbolic circle of ancient towns located northeast of Moscow that contain some of Russia's oldest architecture. Situated on the banks of the majestic Volga and smaller Kotorosl rivers, Yaroslavl is one of the most beautiful and historically preserved cities in Russia. CCS volunteers in Russia, will get to work side-by-side with local people in a Social Services placement. Skilled Russian translators will be available at the volunteer placement, to support and facilitate the volunteer experience.
Middle East
Youth Action for Peace offers a volunteer program in the West Bank. : YAP is an international youth movement, with branches main in Europe and associated group and partner organization elsewhere worldwide. YAP offers Volunteer exchanges, Seminars and training, and Peace and Development Education.
Middle East International Energy Fund seeks volunteers for the Bahrain office with the following skills: database design, Web page design, special events planning, public speaking, public relations, editing, fundraising The area focused on is economic development, education, energy conservation, and the environment. Volunteers will assist the President of the Middle East IEF Regional Headquarters, Dr. Waheeb Alnaser from Bahrain, in the continuous development of the regional headquarters.

Institute for Volunteering Research, funded by the Community Fund, will consider the relationship between volunteering and social exclusion. The research will concentrate on three groups for whom social exclusion can be an issue – Black and ethnic minority communities, disabled people, and offenders and ex-offenders. Fieldwork will be located in three geographical areas, selected for their contrasting characteristics. The areas are East Devon, Sheffield and the London Borough of Haringey.
