The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies of the University of the West Indies is hosting its Fourth Annual Conference in Barbados, January 15-17, 2003. The theme of the conference, Development Strategy and Policy for Small States in the Context of Global Change was created against the backdrop of ongoing trade liberalisation, structural reforms, and increased surveillance of global governance institutions. The events of September 11th 2001 accelerated a downturn in the world economy, and occasioned the need for policy makers in small, vulnerable states to reflect on strategies for coping with globalisation. The theme of the conference integrates a series of critical thematic panels with an important set of other panels that highlight the concerns of stakeholders and development partners. The contributions are expected to address vital theoretical and policy-based issues in the field of development studies.

The The World Affairs Challenge is an innovative academic competition international relations. Teams of middle and high school students compete in three different events that test their analytical and presentation skills and their knowledge of world events. The Challenge will take place on March 8, 2003 in Denver, Colorado.

Euresco Conferences are a program of the European Science Foundation, with funding from the High Level Scientific Conferences Activity of the European Commission. The World Affairs Challenge is geared toward high school and middle school social studies teachers and their students. Students spend up to three months preparing for the competition, with research and administrative support provided by the University of Denver. An international topic area is selected as the focus of study. Within this focus of study, Challenge teams identify a more narrow and specific aspect of the topic for their team presentation. The end of the research process culminates with the World Affairs Challenge Summit, which occurs on the DU campus each Spring.
