FPA Town Hall: The Global Food Crisis

The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) hosted a Town Hall meeting on the current global food crisis at the Chapin School in New York City on Saturday, April 4, 2009, with exceptional participation from area high school students.

The Town Hall featured a panel discussion with leading food policy experts who provided an overview on the recent food crisis, as well as the continuing dangers of food scarcity and its connection to poverty and economic development.

The panel was composed of individuals from several sides of the food security issue who discussed how their sector battles the short-term and long term challenges of food shortages - and were met with excellent questions from the attending high school students!

The panelists included:

  • Bettina Luescher, Spokesperson, United Nations World Food Programme

  • Guilherme de Aguiar Patriota, Minister Counselor, Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations

  • Silke Pietzsch, Food Security Advisor, Action Against Hunger

    Moderated by:

Barbara Crossette, former foreign correspondent and United Nations Bureau Chief for The New York Times, and author

When the panel concluded, the students met amongst themselves to discuss the panel. Panelist Silke Pietzsch from Action Against Hunger attended the student discussions to answer more questions from the attendees.

In preparation for the Town Hall, FPA launched a “Global Food Crisis” blog to help participating students prepare for the meeting and to open a dialogue about the topic to the public. The blog features posts containing background information, news articles, and information on panelists. The blog gave students attending the Town Hall an opportunity to post questions on the issue prior to the meeting.

The blog will continue to be updated with the latest information on the global food crisis as a part of FPA's Foreign Policy Blogs network.
