      Governor of Tokyo

      Mr. Ishihara was first elected as the Governor of Tokyo in 1999 and will hold office until his term is up in 2007. He has a distinguished career in Japanese politics, which began officially in 1968 when he was elected to the House of Councilors for the first time with a record 3 million votes. He spent the next 25 years holding various positions in the Upper and Lower house of the Diet. Mr. Ishihara was born in Kobe, Japan in 1932. He won the 34th Akutagawa Prize for his novel Taiyo no Kisetsu (Season of the Sun) in 1956. In 1987 he was appointed Minister of Transport in the Takishita Cabinet. He also ran in the Liberal Democratic Party Presidential election in 1988.
